Why was the IDEA Summit started?
As a District we have taken great strides with the re-designed curriculum. The re-designed curriculum is student-centered, flexible and encourages deeper learning. Although the future job market is impossible to predict, with this curriculum students have the opportunity to explore their passions and interests through the application of their knowledge. The Entrepreneurship Strand within the Applied Design Skills and Technology curriculum reinforces this methodology. It harnesses the power of learning by “doing” and provides opportunities for our students to be challenged and inspired as they learn to search for creative solutions to authentic real-world problems.
In addition, Entrepreneurship supports the valuable 21st Century skills within the Core Competencies, a very important component of the curriculum re-design. Having our students engaged in these learning experiences provides them with opportunities to hone their communication and collaboration skills through reflective and creative problem-solving. As the students journey through this active process, they learn more about themselves and their roles in this rapidly changing world and develop skills to empower themselves to solve both personal and community problems.
When and where will this take place?

Students can participate in the student showcase of entrepreneurial creations. To be recommended for the IDEA Summit showcase, the process of developing/showcasing student products/ideas at their school must be complete prior to Spring Break.
How do students develop products/ideas?
Teachers have their students participate by guiding them through the Design Thinking process to develop a product or idea to share. Teachers can utilize the Powerplay Young Entrepreneur Program (District-paid program) or may create their own curriculum to develop students’ entrepreneurial mindsets. Teachers can find more information on Design Thinking HERE. Teachers sign up by sending an email to dtomlinson@sd35.bc.ca to be placed in an MS Team for Teachers. This Team will provide support and resources for Entrepreneurship as well as information on the IDEA Summit.
How is it decided which students can showcase at the Summit?
Students showcasing their products/ideas at the IDEA Summit must be:
1. Recommended by their teachers prior to Spring Break (more information coming).
2. Approved by the IDEA Summit Selection Committee, who take into consideration several criteria to determine who will have one of the limited showcase spots. In addition to the criteria listed below, the committee takes into consideration the audience attending and duplication of products or ideas. The selection process occurs prior to Spring Break to allow showcase students time to create 80-100 units of their products to sell at the Showcase.
