Meet the 2019 IDEA-X Judges
![]() Alex Johansen Outdoor Learning and Sustainability Program Specialist, Science World, BC Alex was brought up by the rolling canola fields and quartzite mountains of Alberta, Canada in Tsuu T'ina/Métis/Plains Cree (Treaty 6) ancestral territory. She recently finished her M.Ed. in Urban Environmental Education where she looked at the interface between social justice and the urban environment. She uses these topics as a lens when designing programs and evaluating galleries as the curator of the Ken Spencer Science Park and Our World galleries at Science World. With a background as a marine educator with the Vancouver Aquarium and Parks Canada, she has seen the effects of plastics from gutter to coastline and is excited to see the future of solutions coming out of Idea X 2019.

![]() Adrian Midwood Executive Director of Plastic Ocean We aim to educate Canadians to become plastic literate, so they can make informed decisions about how and when they accept plastic and challenge society’s perception that this indestructible substance can be treated as ‘disposable’.
Adrian is originally from Maple Ridge BC. After finishing school, he traveled the world working as a commercial Captain. For the past 7 years, Adrian has worked directly on waste plastic remediation programs such as developing government programs for Fiji and Tonga on education and waste collection, building infrastructure and job creation for local rural communities centered around valuing plastics and collaborating with most major international NGO’s and foreign embassies based in the South Pacific on frameworks for waste plastic remediation. He has just finished an extensive school tour across B.C. creating engagement and momentum for action. |

Catriona has worked at the intersection of business, sustainability and technology for the last nine years with organizations in Canada, UK, Europe and India. She recently joined Foresight as Director of Partnerships and Strategy, taking a lead on delivering high profile programs around clusters, partnerships, collaboration and communications. Most recently she was Director of Business Development and Marketing for Vericatch, a Vancouver based technology company working in the fisheries sector. Previously, she was Head of Business Development at Energy Unlocked, Sustainability Advisor at Forum for the Future and Program Officer for Skype founder’s family foundation, Zennstrom Philanthropies where she led a cleantech program called the Green Mentorship Award. She has been a jury member for cleantech and innovation competitions including EcoSummit, Start-Up Energy Transition and a mentor in the Innovation Forum and CleanTech Challenge programs. Catriona has a MA Environment, Development and Policy from University of Sussex, UK and a BSc International Development from University College Cork, Ireland. |
